Hij werkt als journalist na zijn HBS A voor Het Vrije Volk bij bijna alle regionale redacties en stapt hij in 1973 over na de omroep. Met nog een aantal jaren tot zijn pensioenering bij de VPRO te gaan bedenkt hij het radioprogramma OVT dat hij tot 1 januari 2000 presenteert en ook de redactie doet. Hij werkt als journalist na zijn HBS A voor Het Vrije Volk bij bijna alle regionale redacties en stapt hij in 1973 over na de omroep. Komt in dienst van de VARA als redacteur en maakt in 1975 de overstap naar de VPRO waar hij zich helemaal thuis voelt. Voor de VPRO maakt hij bijdragen voor alle radioprogramma's. Met nog een aantal jaren tot zijn pensioenering bij de VPRO te gaan bedenkt hij het radioprogramma OVT dat hij tot 1 januari 2000 presenteert en ook de redactie doet. OVT is een programma waarin oral history een belangrijke rol speelt.en wordt uitgezonden op de zondagochtend via Radio1. Kees ziet kans naast zijn werk voor de VPRO-radio een groot aantal boeken te schrijven. Zijn boeken spelen zich meestal af in Zeeland, in een persoonlijk woordenboek spreekt hij niet alleen zijn liefde uit voor zijn geboorteplek, maar heeft ook kritiek op de Zeeuwen en het gebied waar zij wonen..Hij schrijft over de verhalen van "gewone mensen" zoals die er zijn over de Watersnood van 1953. Als 68 jarige vindt hij ook nog tijd om politiek te bedrijven als senator voor de SP in de eerste kamer.
